News:~ After a long, four-week layoff, the PGA Tour is finally back in Hawaii this week for the Sentry Tournament of Champions. OK, maybe not that long, but golf’s absence was certainly felt over the holiday season, and it will officially mean something again on Thursday when 34 of the winners from the 2016-’17 season on the PGA Tour tee it up on the Plantation Course at Kapalua.

Among the small field are seven of the top 10 players in the world, including Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and defending champion Justin Thomas. All three of them could capture their second career Tournament of Champions victory with a win this week. Rickie Fowler is also in the field, fresh off his impressive win at the Hero World Challenge, which featured a final round 61.

The 34-man field, limited to 2017 winners on the PGA Tour, includes the top five players in the world — Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Thomas, Jon Rahm and Hideki Matsuyama. … This matches the second-largest field since the tournament moved to Kapalua in 1999. … Masters champion Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson are the only 2017 tour winners who chose not to play. … Three players combined to win 25 percent of PGA Tour events in 2017 — Justin Thomas (5), Dustin Johnson (4) and Jordan Spieth (3). … Only nine players in the Tournament of Champions last year made it back to Kapalua. … This is the only par 73 on the PGA Tour. It features only one par 3 (No. 11) on the back nine. … Fourteen of the 34 players are playing this winners-only event for the first time. … Spieth has not played an official PGA Tour event since the Tour Championship. … The field includes Cameron Smith and Jonas Blixt, who won the team event at the Zurich Classic last year. … Geoff Ogilvy of Australia (2009-10) is the last repeat winner at Kapalua. That also was the last time an American failed to win the Tournament of Champions.
